UNDERSTANDING INTERVIEWING & INTERROGATION TECHNIQUES:

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course provides insight regarding how investigators use interview and interrogation to obtain and interpret operational information pertaining to crimes. Tips on developing rapport with the subject will be outlined and skills of timing, rhythm and tempo of questioning to keep the subject off balance so they are less able to be guarded in their responses will be emphasized. Analyses of interview and interrogation results are considered in terms of separation of truth and lies. Factors that affect interviews and interrogation such as non-verbal communication, personality disorders, stress, guilt and mindset will also be discussed.

Distinguish the fundamental differences between interviewing and interrogation

Develop initial skill sets to obtain information from crime suspects

Analyze information from interviews and interrogation to determine truth from lies

Understand human factors which impact subjects and their responses to questioning


AUTHOR AND INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION:

Danny B. Scalf has over twenty-five years of progressive experience in management, intelligence and diplomacy. His demonstrated expertise in cross-cultural communication and negotiations has resulted in a long list of achievements within the military and civilian communities. In addition to work within the Department of Defense, he has held numerous positions in business and industry, employing his expertise in risk assessments, forensic investigation and mediation. Scalf has received many awards and decorations for his work with sensitive intelligence operations that were of major significance to national security. In 1994, he received the Exceptional Human Intelligence Collector Award from the Director of the United States Central Intelligence.


WHO MAY TAKE THIS COURSE:
Police officers, forensic investigators and others who wish to improve their interview and interrogation skills.

METHOD OF COURSE OFFERING:
This online course consists of instructor led discussions, case studies, interactive, forums, and independent study.


TEACHING METHOD: Participants are given assignments, homework and online quizzes that are electronically submitted to the instructors via e-mail. This course will be presented in the form of weekly reading assignments (textbook and/or course materials) and problems sets consisting of study questions and case examples. Problem sets will be presented with each topic and will be due by the end of the week by e-mail or fax. There are assigned readings and asynchronous instructor-hosted discussion forums. Additionally a final written examination will be given at the end of the course. The Instructors are available for support and guidance throughout the duration of the course.

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION:
Upon completion of the course study, course evaluation submission and examination passing score of 70%, the student will receive an official embossed Certificate of Completion verifying continuing education hours.
