INTERACTING WITH THE VICTIM:
STRATEGIES FOR DISCLOSURE AND SURVIVAL


COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This comprehensive course is one of a two-part series on the continuum of theory, assessment and intervention along the continuum of perpetration and victimization (Corresponding course VC-1008: Interviewing Strategies: Confronting the Offender -Interviewing the Client). This course examines an expanded awareness and understanding of the contemporary trends and issues surrounding the plight of victims/survivors of interpersonal violence, crime and sudden traumatic death continues to be of increasing interest for contemporary forensic practice. This course examines a variety of victimization experiences and explores foundational facets of theory, assessment and intervention with victims/survivors, their families and the community at large. Focusing on all levels of prevention, theoretical frameworks and clinical applications for bio-psycho-social response patterns to victimization will be discussed, including typical and atypical intrapsychic and behavioral manifestations in victims/survivors and their families after various crimes/related trauma.


OBJECTIVES:

Examine contemporary trends and issues regarding victimization

Discuss foundational approaches for comprehensive bio-psycho-social and
medico-legal assessment of victims/survivors

Identify appropriate interventions for victimized clients


INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION:

Dr. Paul T. Clements is a forensic psychiatric/mental health specialist from Virginia Beach, VA. His former positions include: Assistant Director/Bereavement Therapist at The Homicide Bereavement Center at the Office of the Medical Examiner in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and former Director of Operations for the City of Philadelphia Department of Public Health. He is an experienced therapist, trainer, consultant, and critical incident/trauma response specialist with almost 15 years experience in management and crisis intervention. Dr. Clements has provided counseling and crisis intervention to over 1500 families of murder victims, as well as to high numbers of surviving family members in the aftermath of suicide, industrial and occupational deaths, motor vehicle accidents, sudden infant death syndrome, and other types of sudden violent death, as well as to survivors of interpersonal violence such as sexual abuse, rape, stalking and arson. Dr. Clements has provided nationwide corporate and hospital consultation to establish workplace procedures for violence prevention and development of risk assessment/management teams. In addition, he has conducted training and stress management seminars designed for State Police, EMTs, Child Protective Agency personnel, trauma/emergency nurses, attorneys and corporate executives. Recently, Dr. Clements was involved in the TV and printed news media, as well as interviewed on National Public Radio (NPR), related to discussions regarding the offender, victims and survivors of the Virginia Tech shootings. Dr. Clements has numerous publications and conference presentations regarding stress, trauma, violence and aggression, coping after violent death and exposure to interpersonal violence and crime. He is an Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse (APRN, BC) with national board certification as a Specialist in Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health Nursing. Dr. Clements holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychiatric Forensic Nursing from The University of Pennsylvania. His current research involves traumatic presentations and behaviors in children exposed to the homicide of a family member. Dr. Clements is a Distinguished Fellow in the International Association of Forensic Nurses.

Nurses and other clinical personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters and safety personnel, EMTs, and paramedics.


PREREQUISITES: None


PRESENTATION METHOD:
This online course consists of instructor led discussions, interactive forums, and independent study.


TEACHING METHOD: Participants are given assignments, homework and online quizzes that are electronically submitted to the instructors via e-mail. This course will be presented in the form of weekly reading assignments (textbook and/or course material) and problems sets consisting of study questions and case examples. Problem sets will be presented with each topic and will be due by the end of the week by e-mail or fax. There are assigned readings and asynchronous instructor-hosted discussion forums. Additionally a final written examination will be given at the end of the course. The Instructors are available for support and guidance throughout the duration of the course.

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION:
Upon completion of the course study, course evaluation submission and examination passing score of 70%, the student will receive an official embossed Certificate of Completion verifying continuing education hours.
