ETHICS FOR FORENSIC NURSING

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is an introductory course which will explore and utilize ethical theories, principles, values and philosophy using forensic case-based interactive discussions. Topics include: Ethical Theory, Ethical Principles, Values Clarification, Values Development, and Ethical Decision Making.


INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Angela Geis has been a Registered nurse for over 28 years. Employment roles and responsibilities have included Operating Room and Employee Health Nurse, Case Manager, TB Control Nurse, Home Health Surveyor for the State Of Texas, Research Nurse, and Materials Use Evaluation Specialist. All of these positions contributed to her acumen in forensic nursing. Geis received extensive training in the application of ethical principles to patient care and nursing practice while serving as a Surveyor for the State of Texas. She has investigated or was involved in reporting: abuse, neglect, exploitation, death, fraud, and unlawful or unethical nurse /healthcare worker practices.

Define ethical and philosophical terms

Describe the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses (2001)

Relate and apply ethical theories, principles and philosophies to forensic case-based discussions

Meet the objectives outlined in the textbook


WHO MAY TAKE THIS COURSE
Nurses and other clinical personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters and safety personnel, EMTs, paramedics and others who have duties to record photographic evidence.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

DURATION
This is a 6 Week course. The course must be completed within one calendar year of enrollment.


PRESENTATION METHOD
This online course consists of instructor led discussions, and practical exercises in forensic photography, interactive forums, and independent study.


TEACHING METHOD
This program is presented online with on-going instructor participation. There is an established time frame for completion of assignments, homework, research projects, and for participating in discussion forums. Lessons are supplemented by online interactive quizzes, tutorials, and discussions. All assignments and homework must be submitted to the instructor via e-mail or digital drop box. Routine course guidance and instructional materials will be accessed online. A final examination is administered interactively and can be accessed by the student within a specified time period. The course syllabus provides students with a roadmap for course navigation as well as a detailed schedule.


METHOD OF COURSE GRADING
Case Studies 50 %
Discussions 25 %
Final Examination 25 %


METHOD OF COURSE EVALUATION

After successful completion of the course study and examination with a passing score of 70%, an evaluation shall be completed and submitted to amerforensi@linkline.com.


CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION
Upon completion of the course study, examination with a passing score of 70%, and evaluation, the student will receive an official original Certificate of Course Completion verifying continuing education hours.
