SS-2001
IDENTIFICATION OF PATTERNED INJURIES
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to introduce the student to common patterned injuries that may be associated with abuse, neglect or result from unintentional trauma. The characteristic types of blunt and sharp force injuries will be presented using a series of slides, which illustrate classic soft tissue and skeletal injuries that may be revealed during routine clinical assessments. The mechanics of injury will be emphasized along with their forensic significance. Nursing care components will include injury recognition, using appropriate terminology for documentation, reporting and evidence preservation in the clinical setting.
The course materials will present illustrations and characteristics of classic wounds and other traumatic injuries. Emphasis will be upon precise objective descriptions essential for forensic documentation.
By completing this course, and incorporating the information that the student learns into basic practice, he/she will be taking the first step to ensure that he/she is prepared to detect and refer abused and neglected patients. Those who work in hospitals will also be helping the employer in meeting the important JCAHO standards for accreditation.
Key Point: Each individual who works in a hospital or other healthcare facilities has a legal obligation to properly document the characteristics and extent of wounds and other traumatic injuries, and, to report findings suggestive of intentional injuries associated with human abuse or interpersonal violence.
